As 2023 draws to a close, with the world hotter than ever and on track to exceed 1.5 degrees warming, world leaders are increasingly concerned and strive ever harder to agree on ambitious climate action. They have focused on an increasingly pressing issue: food.

The interactions between food and climate had surfaced around the UN’s Food Systems Summit in 2021, where it became clear that climate change threatens agricultural productivity, disrupts food supply chains, reduces resilience, erodes the livelihoods of millions of farmers and food workers, and threatens food and nutrition security (especially for women and children).  The impact of these interactions on people has been exacerbated by the impacts of Covid-19, increased levels of conflict, and increases in the cost-of-living.

At the Cop28 annual climate meeting, in Dubai, the governments of 154 countries endorsed the groundbreaking Cop28 UAE Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action. They committed to address both food system vulnerabilities to climate change and the impacts of food systems on climate and nature. This is an important first, and a sign of the concerns being felt everywhere.

In Europe the concerns are felt in higher food prices, and strained household budgets as a result of income poverty (which threatens more than 20 per cent of the population). In Sub-Saharan Africa, smallholder farmers whose communities depend on agriculture are bearing the brunt of record high temperatures and extreme weather events.

In addition, modern food systems drive 90 per cent of deforestation and 60 per cent of biodiversity loss, and account for 70 per cent of the world’s use of fresh water.  They are also reliant on fossil fuels which are used for production of pesticides; synthetic fertilisers and plastics; and in processing, transport, distribution and cooking. Overall, food systems contribute over one third of global greenhouse gas emissions.

A global collaboration

Cop28 has provided a remarkable opportunity for accelerating the transformation of food systems in ways that align with intentions for climate action, protecting nature, improving nutrition and safeguarding rural livelihoods.

Everyone has a role: rethinking and innovating on how food is produced, stored, packed, processed, traded, distributed, marketed, consumed and disposed of. At Cop28, it was evident that farmers seek to be partners in the transformation — which should be informed by evidence and experience, and involve marginalised and vulnerable groups. Traditional agricultural approaches, which have produced food in harmony with nature for millennia, should also inform this process.

Improved weather forecasting is one example of a technology available today, with the potential to benefit 260-305 million farmers in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Multiple studies have shown that farmers across these regions adjust their behavior and investment decisions based on these highly specific forecasts, and the payoff is clear. In Benin, for example, farmers who received SMS forecasts earned $104-$356 more per year than farmers who did not.

Implementing transformation is not easy and will require a significant financial commitment. At Cop28, we saw some progress. Representatives of the half billion small-scale farmers and fisherfolk, many from the communities most vulnerable to climate impacts, pointed out during the Cop that they need support as they struggle to adapt to a warming world. Notably, several financial pledges were announced while others are in the making.

Government representatives described their plans to incorporate action on climate and biodiversity within efforts to transform national food and water systems in ways that contribute to food and nutrition security for all and encourage the reliance of farmer livelihoods. Representatives of international organisations described how they will intensify collaboration to ensure intensified support for these national efforts. New multi-stakeholder partnerships for research, innovation and collective are being developed.

Government involvement in transforming food systems is crucial since governments provide the enabling conditions for producers and consumers to make healthier and more sustainable food choices. School meal programs, for example, feed over 400 million children worldwide, providing a huge, predictable market for food. Large-scale public programs such as these offer a unique opportunity for governments to procure food that is nutritious and sustainably sourced, impacting food systems and improving diets on a national scale.

The potential prize is great. We are witnessing innovative solutions that help address food and nutrition insecurity while contributing to action on climate and biodiversity crises, but these solutions need to be adopted and deployed globally. This must be done in close collaboration with farmers, businesses, civil society, local authorities, national governments, and international processes. It is anticipated that the UAE will encourage a constellation of convergent support during 2024, the year of its Cop presidency.

Left as they are, food systems will continue to accelerate climate breakdown and biodiversity decline, fail to nourish people and leave them exposed to future shocks. With concerted attention they can provide food that is healthy, affordable and nutritious, help halt and reverse biodiversity collapse, and insulate humanity from future climate shocks that are inevitable for the coming decades.

For humanity, everywhere, usual food business is no longer an option.

A prosperous Africa has a lot to offer Europe. Stable food production and food security are the basic conditions for prosperity for our southern neighbors. An attractive, resilient economy in Africa is also essential for Europe.

Africa has a plethora of assets: half of the population is under 25 years old, the continent has a quarter of global farmland and its gigantic rainforests act as the world’s ‘green lung’. The continent has traditionally maintained good relations in food production and trade with many European countries and universities.

African science is flourishing and several countries have acquired robust research capacities, also in the agricultural domain. For instance, institutions such as Kenya’s ICIPE (insect research) and transnational research bodies such as the CGIAR lead the way in sustainable crop protection and biological control. Their activities not only benefit Africa, but are also pertinent for the envisioned pesticide phasedown within Europe’s Green Deal.

Securing a thriving agricultural sector and a stable food supply in Africa is not easy. The big cities beckon and exert a relentless attraction for young, dynamic workers. The global climate crisis and the increase (food) price volatility and production shortfalls all highlight how vital a close cooperation with Africa is for sustainable growth, stability, peace and security. Europe can play a pioneering role, provided that African countries are at the helm.

The days of charitable funding are long gone but are still reflected in the attitudes of many European countries. Partly because of this, Europe has wasted influence and goodwill on the continent. Recent military coups signal how Africa’s youth are rejecting colonialism. Colonial thinking is firmly rejected by all ages and ‘handouts’ are no longer appropriate.

Thanks to education, technological advancements and social media, today’s Africans know better. They also prefer to define their own future. A new paradigm is emerging in which African leadership, mutual respect, equality and shared perspectives must form the basis of international cooperation.According to a recent interview with the President of the African Development Bank; “the highway to wealth is through global value chains”. “One needs to add value to everything you have, from oil to metal ore and food.” However, Africa would be hampered in its sustainable development, if too much emphasis is placed on the next outflow of primary raw materials.

In contrast, value-added manufacturing can absorb young workers and lift the continent out of poverty. In close cooperation with the Netherlands and the EU, Africa can invest strategically in food, agriculture and growth-promoting chains/sectors.

Although starting points differ, important lessons can be drawn from Asian countries such as Vietnam, Bangladesh and others. Over a span of decades, these countries lifted large shares of their population out of poverty and managed to achieve steady economic growth. Much can be gained through South-South cooperation and Europe could play a pivotal role in orchestrating such knowledge exchange or mutually beneficial ‘cross-pollination’.

Europe must also realize that its relationship with the countries in Africa has changed dramatically. For example, the African Union recently became a member of the G20. It is taking on the role within the multipolar and multilateral world order that it envisioned when the organization was founded in 1999 (Sirte Declaration).

The advisory letter ‘Urgency of a new Dutch Africa Strategy’ from the Advisory Council on International Affairs (AIV) can – given geopolitical changes – serve as a starting point to bring about a paradigm shift in the attitude of the Netherlands and other countries in Europe. Yet, these are not easy messages.

Other positive signals could be sent. For instance, Europe can point out even more emphatically to African countries that they have the right to end food imports from Europe at ‘dumped prices’. During this consultation, agreements can also be made about the use of natural resources and investments in the processing of natural raw materials. This contributes to ironing out bilateral issues regarding mutual access to the EU market and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

It takes two to tango. The mutual interests of both Africa and Europe are best served by developing agriculture. Doing so can end hunger and poverty and provide much needed stimulus for sustainable economic growth. If Europe does not step to the fore and assume its role, it might lose more than a mere supplier of cheap raw materials.

On stage at Campus Biotech, I shared my belief that the journey ahead will be influenced by our collective human spirit and cooperation. I underscored the importance of fostering a culture of collaboration, prioritising collective goals over individual ambitions, and complementing confrontation and competition with constructive engagement.

I advocated for leadership that works with living systems – an inclusive approach that necessitates engaging with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including those with opposing views. This method goes beyond seeking common ground; it’s about creating platforms for dialogue and fostering relationships that drive systemic change, moving beyond consensus to meaningful collaboration.

Reflecting on my work with the United Nations on food systems, I shared insights on how facilitating dialogues for the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit, involving thousands, led to a collective vision for sustainable and equitable food systems – and over 100 national pathways for food systems transformation were developed by Member States. This exemplified the importance of unconditional collaboration in building trust and driving change, and it is an effort that continues to evolve today.

I also referenced ongoing research at Imperial College on the mindsets required for effective climate action. This work further corroborates the necessity of embracing diverse perspectives and the willingness to engage across ideological divides in environmental initiatives. The urgency to foster a global culture of dialogue and consensus is critical for an effective climate crisis response. I called for the audience to harness ‘magnetic energy’ to bridge divides, urging a move towards engaging with diverse perspectives.

Can we step beyond our comfort zones and be the catalysts for a united, effective response to climate change? It’s a task that begins with our willingness to connect, listen deeply, and collaborate across all boundaries, in a way that enables every individual to evolve as a force for change.

The event looked at how bodies like the IPCC and IPBES help assess sustainable transition pathways, and the role of CGIAR in providing a solid evidence base.

Key messages from the session included:

how crucial IPCC and IPBES guidance is on transition pathways within agri-food systems that do not undermine food and environmental security, and,

how CGIAR scientist input into these processes while also developing the locally adapted innovations needed to advance these pathways.

At 4SD Foundation, we were particularly impressed in how this was presented by Dr Patrick Caron, CGIAR System Board Member (Vice Chair) in his opening speech.

Find the transcript here and watch the recording further below.

—

Excellencies, distinguished delegates, friends, welcome.

Science and innovation is about understanding the world around us and mobilizing this knowledge to tackle the pressing challenges. Without science, our attempts to navigate the complexity of multiple crisis are simply guesswork.

10 years ago, we could not have imagined a meeting like today’s, bringing together those working on food systems with climate change and biodiversity experts.

Agriculture was considered the enemy, because it emits one third of GHG and is responsible for 70% biodiversity loss. Environment was considered a scarecrow for economic activities.

Well, we are now together to explore the way to address interconnected crisis in a consistent way. This is made possible since food systems are increasingly recognized as one major lever towards sustainability as discussed during the UN Food Systems Summit and here just one week ago.

This calls for pooling collective intelligence from different sources to address trade-offs and obstacles to change, which is not easy as we are used to working in siloes.

For example, squaring the circle to ensure that efforts to reduce emissions and maintain biodiversity do not increase the vulnerability of those left behind relies on the very best knowledge.

More than ever, the world needs the science and knowledge assessed and generated by panels like the IPCC, IPBES, and my own organisation, CGIAR.

From identifying transition pathways to contributing to the desired innovations, our organizations complement one another in advancing the necessary just and equitable transformation. We can together prepare the journey to the unknown and think the unthinkable. Hopefully for the better!

But it is no simple task, and there is a long way to go. I’m delighted that we have some of the world’s leading scientists and climate champions on the panel to discuss the gaps in today’s scientific knowledge and the way to move beyond polarization and knowledge fragmentation.

We will also hear how scientists, particularly those from the Global South, can better participate in global knowledge generation and scientific assessments, such as the ones carried out by IPCC and IPBES.

From this session, I hope we will all gain some insight into the scale of the challenge of transforming food, land and water systems, i.e. the new CGIAR strategy, to meet climate, biodiversity, health and security goals. I hope we will also take heart in the existing opportunities to invest in advancing science and innovation for such a transition.

This October we brought together some of you to start the process of designing a joint roadmap to strengthen science-policy interfaces. Together with the University of Montpellier, we (CGIAR) will convene a large international event, in March next year, to make further progress to improve the knowledge ecosystem efficiency, agree on a common vision, milestones and roadmap, fully mobilizing expert panels and the whole science, policy, society ecosystem.

CGIAR will continue to engage with global expert panels, not only to participate in global assessments, as in the case of Aditi Mukherji and many, to host experts meetings and to support decision making, but also to contribute to shape a safe space for pooling intelligence.

Because, with Science, We Can…

Finally, we must also recognise the importance of nuance and diversity: transforming food, land and water systems in the climate crisis must be human-centric and customised to specific contexts, not just globally relevant. This also requires diversity in our science.

I look forward to be inspired by our esteemed speakers.

Ends

Our interactive session kicked off with a straightforward yet impactful reminder that the challenges we encounter are all interconnected. To tackle these challenges head-on, we recognised the need for a fresh approach. This is what we, at 4SD Foundation, refer to as “living systems leadership,” and it places people at the core of the transformative systems change we strive for.

This negativity often triggers a defensive mindset, leading people to act in self-protective ways. How can we transition towards a method that addresses challenges inclusively, even when we each perceive the world differently? Can a ‘Common Narrative’ unite us?

David Nabarro, Strategic Director of 4SD Foundation.

I first visited the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, in 2019 to curate dialogues that centred around the unique food systems challenges in Canada. There are complex issues to be tackled when fostering food systems that are beneficial for both people and the planet.

For me, being involved in these dialogues and collaborating with the Arrell Food Institute, led by the charismatic Evan Fraser, has been a transformative experience. So I was delighted to hear, earlier this year, that I had been nominated to receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa, from the University of Guelph (UoG). I received this degree on Tuesday, 13th June 2023: it was an unforgettable experience and I am privileged to have been awarded the degree. It was the high point in a three-day visit to Canada.

Monday, June 12th

On Monday I was invited by the Arrell Food Institute to curate a dialogue to shape a new project that is exploring the value of innovations in agriculture. Could innovations foster high productivity and nature-positive farming systems that enable both people and animals to have better standards of living?

The dialogue brought together experienced practitioners from different parts of Canadian food systems, including producers of food for different value chains, advocates of agroecology, proponents of biodiversity in farming, and representatives from agribusinesses. It was part of an ongoing series of dialogues designed to encourage the exploration of food systems from diverse perspectives, to investigate the potential benefits and trade-offs of emerging technologies within different food systems, and to assess what is needed to allow for the full potential of technologies to support a more sustainable food system. The dialogues enabled me to appreciate the potential of targeted investments in novel farming systems, especially within farms managed by women from marginalised communities. This reaffirmed, for me, the significance and value of inclusive approaches to food systems dialogues.

Later that day I was interviewed by Evan Fraser for a film about food systems and their transformation. As part of the film, I had an engaging interaction with two senior doctoral students from the University of Guelph, who asked me some hard questions: Emily Duncan, who is a geographer doing research on farmers’ use of technology for sustainable intensification, and Deus Mugabe, who is a Plant Scientist focusing on plant breeding, genetics, and international development. They asked about whether the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit prioritized collective over individual action, and were keenly interested in the potential for integrating systems approaches into scientific education.

In the evening Alice Tamblyn Raine, who is Director of Operations at the Arrell Food Institute, jointly with her twin sons Theo and Thomas, hosted me together with approximately 30 faculty members and students from all over the globe. I enjoyed learning about their different projects, interests, and aspirations. They want to contribute to just, sustainable, and equitable food systems that emit fewer greenhouse gases and are resilient in the face of climate change. It was an inspiring and stimulating evening, setting the stage for my graduation the following day.

Tuesday, June 13th

David Nabarro and Chancellor Mary Anne Chambers during the graduation ceremony.
The graduation ceremony at the University of Guelph on Tuesday involved several hundred women and men. I sensed the grandeur of the occasion as I donned the iconic red robe, and met up with University Chancellor Mary Anne Chambers and University President (and Vice-Chancellor) Charlotte Yates. Chancellor Chambers enthusiastically shared with me the essence of Guelph University’s values, and how both systems thinking and interdisciplinary approaches come naturally to Guelph students and faculty.

Then it was time for me to receive my degree and address the graduating students. I am always apprehensive when giving talks to large groups like this and my nerves were especially active this day. My speech was an opportunity to share my views about the professional skills that are essential for navigating the uncertainties of the future. First and foremost, I underscored the importance of welcoming complexity, and maintaining an exceptional curiosity that drives us to explore, learn, listen, and seek inspiration from the ideas of others. I highlighted the transformative potential of connecting with diverse individuals, as it often leads to the discovery of innovative approaches. I suggested that there really is no alternative to operating collectively and collaborating with others when trying to make things better for all. Then I drew inspiration from the motto of the Guelph Athletics Teams – the Gryphons – and emphasised the importance of caring: the most important characteristic of all.

The graduation ceremony was a joyful and wholehearted affair. Each graduate ascended to the stage to be adorned with an academic hood and be captured in a forever photograph. Witnessing their radiant smiles, I couldn’t help but reflect on the immense amount of hard work and dedication they had invested throughout their academic journeys. It became evident that behind each smile lay a profound sense of accomplishment, reflecting the culmination of countless hours of effort. Throughout the ceremony, I watched as President Yates privately offered a few words of encouragement and support to each student as they graduated. It was a nurturing environment, in which I sensed each graduate was determined to make a meaningful difference: it fostered a sense of belonging with everyone seeking to make a positive impact.

(From left) Evan Fraser, President Charlotte Yates, David Nabarro, Anne Arrell, Tony Arrell, Senator Robert Black Photo credit: Arrell Food Institute.

Subsequently, President Yates hosted a reception for the guests at the ceremony. I couldn’t help but admire her genuine concern for the health and well-being of all her students and faculty. I was honoured to be alongside the esteemed Senator Robert Black – with his impressive focus on sustainable agriculture and commitment to completing Canada’s soil survey. I met with Tony and Anne Arrell, who are passionate champions for food security and sustainable food systems. They are the benefactors of the pioneering Arrell Food Institute. Their tireless efforts exemplify the values of the university. Also at the reception was Guelph-based multi-media artist Christine de Vuono whose work celebrates people’s needs for beloved care and lived beauty. Evan Fraser, leader of the Arrell Food Institute, was as warm and welcoming as ever. All these great people left a lasting impression on me: they are powerful and enriching change-makers.

Later on Tuesday, I was interviewed by members of the UK Science and Innovation Network from the British Consulate in Toronto. The interview was conducted by Kathryn Chen, the Head of Science, Innovation and Policy, who was supported by Lucy Whichelo, Media and Public Affairs Officer: they went into the story of my life, the significance of my degree, and work I am doing, at Imperial College, on the impact of climate change on people’s health and wellbeing. Kathryn described her experiences when working with First Nations communities whose lifestyles are being upended by the impact of changing weather patterns. I realized that some of these communities are close to Toronto and directly affected by the devastating forest fires that are burning across the country. As we unravelled the links between climate change and food systems, we realized the urgent need to face up to their meaning and implications.

Wednesday, June 14th

On Wednesday I joined a seminar convened by the Maple Leaf Centre for Food Security in downtown Toronto on ways to help Canadian people tackle food insecurity and alleviate associated health burdens. The programme was well organized by the Centre’s staff: my role was to be the facilitator and I found this to be truly captivating. The focus was on the potential for prescribing food in healthcare settings to reduce the impacts of low energy and nutrient intake on people’s health. The meeting explored options for integrating food prescriptions into federal, provincial, and local health policies.

To ignite the discussion we heard from Jennifer Reynolds, the Co-Executive Director of a group called Nourish. She combines humility with courage: her passionate advocacy for universal food security as a moral imperative in Canada was awe-inspiring. Another starting panellist was Dr Andrew Boozary, the Executive Director of the Gattuso Centre for Social Medicine at the University Health Network. As a primary care practitioner, he was unequivocal about the need to include the option to prescribe food as a component of health care when treating patients who are food insecure. He explained why it is important to tune in to the social and economic determinants of health within Canada. We then had a set of 5 simultaneous facilitated dialogues on issues that need to be resolved if food prescribing is to be expanded. These harnessed the collective energy and ideas of the participants and used techniques with which we are familiar in the 4SD Foundation. It was a constructive and collaborative atmosphere that allowed for meaningful progress in the field of social prescribing.

Big thanks ….

A lunch meeting between (from left) Alice Tamblyn Raine, David Nabarro, Erin Doherty, Evan Fraser and Janice Leboeuf.
I am super grateful to everyone involved in supporting me on this experience. Special thanks go to colleagues from Guelph, particularly President Charlotte Yates and Chancellor Mary Anne Chambers, as well as Evan Fraser, Alice Tamblyn Raine, Erin Doherty and all the dedicated staff and students from the Arrell Food Institute. The Agri-tech dialogue on Monday 12th June showed great promise. Special gratitude to Erin Doherty who was my guide and support while I was in Guelph.

I am also particularly grateful to Lynda Kuhn, Sarah Stern and Merryn Maynard of the Maple Leaf Centre for Food Security, as well as all the participants in the convening on Food Prescriptions. The meticulous organisation at the event and the Centre’s warm hospitality made my visit a truly memorable and impactful experience. Most of all I thank Faculty and Students at the University of Guelph for such a warm and powerful welcome. I very much hope to stay connected to and collaborate with all of these amazing changemakers and their networks….

Receiving the invitation from the University of Pretoria to visit the campus and be awarded an honorary doctorate filled me with immense joy. It wasn’t just any invitation, but an opportunity to visit one of the world’s most prestigious universities—a renowned institution with a forward-looking vision, actively tackling the ongoing challenges in South Africa and across Africa.

David Nabarro (third from right) with Vice Chancellor Tawana Kupe (second from left) with Faculty and students.
Upon my arrival, I was warmly welcomed by my hosts, the Faculty of Health Sciences. Their impressive standing in academia was evident across the four esteemed schools: medicine, dentistry, healthcare sciences, and health systems and public health. I had the privilege of meeting distinguished deans, engaging in discussions with vice deans and chairs of different schools. These initial interactions affirmed that my visit would be an extraordinary two-day window to learn from an academic community known for its excellence and innovative approach.

During my visit, I explored how this institution effectively engages with diverse entities to foster collaboration and create meaningful impact. This university functions as a vast ecosystem, recognising the importance of the intricate connections that it must establish and nurture with local authorities, government bodies, and stakeholders across various segments of the healthcare system.

Shortly after my arrival on the 11th, I enthusiastically participated in the first of two significant sessions, where I had the privilege of listening to different researchers sharing their work and collaborative efforts. These sessions provided a valuable platform for me to absorb their insights and contribute my own perspectives. The discussions were filled with lively exchanges, extending from noon until 5 p.m. A notable aspect was the informality that fostered the perfect atmosphere for open and engaging dialogue. This kind of setting is something I truly cherish and actively seek during my travels, particularly when I can take the time to embrace and appreciate diverse perspectives.

Given my particular interest, I had the privilege of engaging in organised discussions regarding the spread of zoonotic diseases (those transmitted between humans and animals), as well as the viruses and other agents responsible for infectious diseases and pandemics. Notably, the latter group played a crucial role in characterising the COVID-19 Omicron variant when it first emerged. Additionally, I gained valuable insights into the various strategies employed to control malaria, especially in anticipation of the changing incidence of malaria in Southern Africa due to global warming and climate change.

One aspect that impressed me greatly was the concerted effort to integrate various scientific disciplines and foster interdisciplinary collaboration. This approach ensures that the knowledge generated is directly applicable to the real-world contexts in which people live. For example, the university’s commitment to prioritising the wellbeing and capacities of the people who work in health care, and working with healthcare systems as living systems – influenced, and managed by people – was evident throughout. This reflects the principles of living systems that are so important at 4SD Foundation. The experts in the University understand that achieving equitable public health outcomes, where priority care is available for those who need it, not just those who can afford it, relies on health systems that function well with people’s needs at the centre. In this university the faculty are prepared to think hard about what makes a health system make a difference to the lives and livelihoods of people. They don’t see hospitals as the primary place for improving public health, instead, they recognise the integral role that communities play in health systems.

Overall, my visit to Pretoria university helped me appreciate its dedication to cultivating a holistic and multidimensional approach to research and application. While I realized that I lacked expertise with the local context, I offered some advice on maximising the efficiency of policies and procedures, ensuring optimal resource utilisation, and striving for outcomes that align with the aspirations of the people. A key aspect I emphasised was the importance of recognising the unique identities of different groups and investing in relationships that promote open sharing of ideas and knowledge.

I was able to delve into the five characteristics exhibited by living systems leaders:

Hold competing perspectives simultaneously

See the whole system differently to its separate parts

Feel into the pace, rhythm and readiness

See the system in relationship to its environment

Meet people right where they really are

These discussions underscored the significance of identity, relationships, and the act of sharing openly — all essential for building long-term, trusting relationships. The exploration of these themes served as a rich source of insights that resonated deeply. It became evident that the principles governing living systems could be harnessed to navigate complex challenges and pursue meaningful change.

One particularly captivating aspect of my visit was witnessing the university’s engagement in the process of reconciliation and forgiveness, as well as observing how the broader society is structured. Through various art forms and exhibits, they vividly portrayed this transformative process. As we collaborated, I realised that there was much to learn from their profound understanding of trust and the characteristics of living systems, which they actively apply in their endeavours.

To conclude the day, we were deeply moved by the inspiring story of Dr. Bongani Mayosi, a brilliant cardiologist who tragically passed away at a young age. Dr. Mayosi had a profound realisation that heart health is profoundly affected by one’s poverty status—a stark reminder that poverty breaks hearts. It reinforced the pressing need to address the profound impact of poverty on individual well-being and overall heart health. It was a poignant moment to be in the presence of Vice Chancellor Tawana Kupe, who had played a pivotal role in developing Dr. Mayosi’s narrative. His involvement highlighted the university’s commitment to recognising and uplifting individuals who embody the values and actions required to drive positive change.

Being immersed in a society actively engaged in the process of reconciliation added another layer of significance to the experience. It underscored the collective effort to heal wounds, reconcile differences, and forge a path towards a more inclusive and harmonious future. Witnessing their willingness to identify role models who exemplify the necessary steps for progress was truly remarkable.

On the final day of my visit, I had the opportunity to explore the Future Africa campus, a hub dedicated to interdisciplinary research on the African continent. I was particularly intrigued by two key initiatives.

The first centered around understanding the interconnectedness of animal, human, and environmental health—an approach commonly known as “One Health.” I engaged in enlightening discussions with Professor Wanda Makota, delving into the critical relationship between these aspects and the implications for overall well-being.

The second initiative focused on food systems, and it was truly exciting to witness the enthusiasm and innovative approaches demonstrated by the postdoctoral fellows in their pursuit of interdisciplinary collaboration. We dedicated time to exploring practical ways of making these initiatives a reality, recognising the barriers of the systems in which they work.

Later in the day, I had the privilege of attending the graduation ceremony where I received an honorary doctorate (click here to watch a recording of the event). The atmosphere was vibrant, with academics and the community coming together to celebrate their enormous achievements. The Vice Chancellor delivered a powerful speech, and the Dean shared a statement, emphasising the significance of their milestones. Witnessing the graduates receiving their awards was a moment of shared pride and accomplishment.

As I prepared to depart and return to Geneva, I couldn’t help but reflect on the invaluable lessons I had learned during my time in Pretoria. I was deeply impressed by the country’s resilience in the face of significant ongoing changes and its unwavering commitment to fostering collaboration across different scientific disciplines, sectors, and stakeholders. The collective community’s dedication to driving meaningful change through partnerships was truly inspiring. It became evident that our expertise and experiences held value in supporting activities in Pretoria and other universities. It was a realization that we were not merely observers, but active participants to support the change.

Overall, my visit provided an opportunity to offer capacity-building support, learn from others, and provide valuable feedback. I was honoured to witnessed first-hand the value that academics found in embracing the principles of living systems in their respective journeys. The living systems approach offered a fresh perspective and practical tools that enhanced their work and enriched their academic pursuits and I look forward to accompanying their change.

Members discuss their discoveries and explore on useful guidance for their projects and activities. We have various programs in which volunteers are engaged for a better environment and a great impact on climate change.

*Approved Centers of Excellence are the implementation actors via the recently launched GCSAYN Virtual Academy e-Learning Platform.

Some of our current flagships and programs include:

Climate smart agriculture (CSA) clubs aims to enhance the capacity of agricultural systems to support food security, incorporating the need for adaptation and the potential for mitigation into sustainable agriculture development strategies. The concept of CSA is evolving and there is no one-size-fits-all blueprint for how it might be pursued.

Women in Agriculture for Sustainable Africa (WASA) is a group of young dynamic women who are passionate about agriculture and transformation of agricultural produce in order to increase shelve- life of farm products and to add value for better profit margin. 70% of the farming population in Africa are women, in which about 40% are women above 35 years of age and 30% are women below 30 years of age. The goals of WASA include;

Is to reduce poverty, hunger, improve health standard by producing healthy food which addresses the SDG number 1,2,3 & 4.

Reduce the unemployment rate in our local communities SDG 8

Do agriculture in a way that is friendly to the environment SDG 13,14,15

Encourage youths to be agricpreneurs through setting up of individual agricbusinesses

The GCSAYN Education Exchange Program (CEEP) is about enhancing student-student, student-teacher and student-lecturer mobility across all our Centres of Excellence hosted within universities.
Mentorship program (3 months): The mentorship program is a three (3) month intensive online course programme that elaborates on climate-smart agricultural practices, agribusiness systems and other environmental sustainability related subjects. This is scheduled for participants who sign up and are already project bearers in the agricultural sector. This is to equip them with the relevant skill in climate-smart agriculture so they can be productive in a changing climate to feed a growing population guaranteeing food security. Objectives of the mentorship program include;

To build the capacity of youth in the climate-smart agricultural

To bridge the food insecurity gap

To provide an avenue for all to have the opportunity for quality education irrespective of their educational background, location or age.

Agribusiness Hub: Agribusiness is the application of business principles to agricultural production, it is complex than agriculture because it is not limited to production but encompasses an entire value chain. Agriculture is as old as man; becoming a way of life especially in rural area and was characterized with low productivity. Though agribusiness is becoming a household name in 21st century, the term was introduced by Davis and Goldberg in 1957.

Additional programs in development include a Livestock, Fisheries and Aquaculture Project, GCSAYN Health Advancement Programme (CHAP), the Climate Hackathon, the African Youth for the SDGs Training (AYSDGT) and Children and Youth in Agriculture (CYA).

To find out more about these programs and to get involved, you can contact info@csaynglobal.org.

How did you integrate what you learned from the Food Systems Summit Dialogues?

At Climate Smart Agriculture Youth Network, we have had opportunity to participate in the Food Systems Summit Dialogues, aimed at discussing the challenges and opportunities of our global food systems. Through our participation, we get involved and ventilated about the complexities of the food systems, and how various stakeholders can work together to create a more sustainable and equitable food system.

While incorporating the dialogues into our mission and vision at GCSAYN, we are focused on;

A holistic and systems-based approach, which includes consideration of the entire food system, from production to consumption, and the interconnections between various components of the system to identify potential opportunities for intervention and collaboration.

Paying attention to the perspectives and needs of various stakeholders, including farmers, consumers, policymakers, and NGOs. With this we recognized the importance of engaging with diverse groups to ensure that all voices are heard and that solutions are effective and inclusive.

To conclude this, we are actively exploring the key innovative and sustainable solutions to address the challenges of the food systems. This included looking at regenerative and also climate smart agriculture practices, circular economy models, and local food systems that can help reduce the environmental impact of food production and increase access to healthy and nutritious food.

Can you tell us more about the collective skills in your team and how you work together to grow engagement?

We have researchers and academicians from different centres of excellence from different regions such as The University of Kabianga, Egerton University, RVIST, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology and many others, also we have professionals from reputable and allied organizations like the United Nations; They are experts towards topics for Climate Smart Agriculture, Climate Change and Technology Matters. In, fact one of our members by the name Suzy TRESOR is doing magnificient, Her, Specialty is on Agriculture and Information Communication Technology (ICT) i.e Climate Information Services, CIS, Youth Coding Workshops (Agri-codeexpo), Empowering Women in Technology plus E-Commerce Platform from United States, West Virginia.

Regarding our collective assignments, it’s extremely intense and more vigorous I must say. Hence, as a team we are very ambitious about our objectives as to educate children and youth on the effects of climate change in agriculture and the role of sustainable practices in reaching 2030 Agenda goals.

We have weekly meetings on Mondays and Fridays for Secretariat Members and Mondays for the Communication team under a team lead, Mr. Stephen Armah.

Above all; I conduct weekly trainings for our interns via an online platform – either a zoom meeting or a google meet. The one who presents and give lectures are the experts on a particular topic at the alignment of Global Climate Smart Agriculture Youth Network (GCSAYN). I am really so proud of our interns, they are participating so much in spreading awareness about the SDG goals, hence, it is our role again for us to motivate the young people by educating and equipping them with work opportunities so that agriculture becomes a working career.

I’m glad to announce that we will be launching our virtual training and learning management platform officially by April 19th, 2023 and this will up the level of the willingness of the young people to take up the charge.

Working on sustainable development can be complex with many people having different perspectives, how do you approach this through your organisation?

The primary objective of GCSAYN is to create awareness and build the capabilities of young people on CSA concepts to strengthen their abilities to adapt and mitigate emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) while sustainably increasing agricultural productivity and food security.

We work hand in hand with many great organizations which focus is to help in the improvement of our eco-system.

Within our organization, there is unity and cooperation, we believe in the power of team work. We aimed at creating awareness and interpreting to the public concerning the 17 SDGs.

We heard about your recent accreditation with the UN, what does this mean for your organisation?

Truly, GCSAYN was approved under the 17 Civil Society Organisations for Association according to United Nations Department. (view press release) We are gladder on the great news which gives us further motivation to communicate and inspire climate action. This accreditation means we receive grounds passes to United Nations official meetings, events and information sessions at Headquarters in New York and the eligibility to propose and lead civil society briefings organized by the United Nations Department of Global Communications.

What are some goals that you have this year?

To work with communication experts under research via UN Volunteers.

To support the translation of the Sustainable Development Goals into Swahili Language.

To fulfill and make the most of the SDG’s as possible, this is by enhancing gender equality through empowering women.

To educate farmers on climate change and informing them about drought resistant crops.

Through programs from different institutions in the world, we aim to plant as many trees as possible.

Are you on track to achieve your goals?

We prioritize innovation and experimentation. We recognize that sustainable development requires new and innovative approaches, and that there is often no one “right” solution.

We are working to experiment with new ideas, test new approaches, and learn from our successes and failures with transparency and accountability.

We strive to be transparent about our goals, strategies, and outcomes, and to engage in ongoing dialogue with stakeholders to ensure that our work is aligned with their needs and priorities.

We are achieving our goals by setting deadlines and tracking our progress.

Also, we set clear milestones and regularly self-evaluating to see how you’re progressing toward your desired results. This has helped us to determine and even having improvement to effectively hit these goals.

What is one piece of advice you would give to an emerging leader, looking to engage with the SDGs?

One piece of advice I would give to an emerging leader looking to engage with the SDGs is to prioritize collaboration and partnership. The SDGs require a collective effort from all stakeholders, including government, private sector, civil society, and individuals, to achieve the ambitious goals set forth.

As a leader, it is essential to build strong partnerships and work collaboratively with diverse groups to create a sustainable future. This involves listening to and valuing the perspectives of others, fostering open communication, and building trust. By prioritizing collaboration and partnership, emerging leaders can leverage the collective power of multiple stakeholders to make progress towards achieving the SDGs.

Biography of Divine Ntiokam

Divine Ntiokam is from Cameroon. He has over 15 years of experience in youth entrepreneurship, advocacy and mobilization of youth interested in agriculture. In May 2014, he established the Climate Smart Agriculture Youth Network Global (GCSAYN), which is now operational in more than one hundred and seventy (170) countries. His background includes international exposure in youth mainstreaming, notably participating in the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development since inception where, to ensure “Leave No One Behind”, he coordinated and facilitated the translation of the Global Goals into over sixty (60) local languages, as well as transcription into Braille for the visually impaired.

For the SDGs to be for youth with youth, Divine designed a program entitled: African Youth for the SDGs training (AYSDGT) where youth are trained to better comprehend and own the SDGs in their local languages. He has hands-on experience and training developing and managing youth projects. He is a committed team builder, reaching out to youth in urban and rural areas with French and English networking abilities, which has been key to helping the CSAYN become operational.

It is my nature and training to have a global perspective, but it can be easy to forget that there’s still a pandemic and can even feel isolating, like being among the few wearing a mask at the supermarket nowadays. But, joining 4SD’s Open Online Briefings, I am constantly reminded that we are a global community, that we share values and purpose, that the pandemic is not over, that we can all contribute to the solution, that we can always do better. In writing this new report on COVID communication strategies, I learned that the words we use, and how we communicate with the public to make meaning, really matters. I learned that radical transparency in public communications is critical, and that being honest when we are uncertain helps to build trust and fend off misinformation.

The Briefings provide a safe space for sharing and they are the only place that I know of where there is real time information from people in-country across different continents – I can have a sense of what is going on that hasn’t been filtered through other kinds of media. How else would I hear the struggles of today from someone in Mozambique, Chile, Nepal, and the UK all in a one-hour session? The unfiltered nature of the Briefings allows me to hear the raw emotion in peoples voices and their concerns about what is really happening on the ground in that moment in their life. It anchors information in a way that we can’t hear otherwise. Issues ranging from long-COVID, to the recent earthquake in Türkiye and Syria, are all summarised delicately by David Nabarro; for me the Briefings are a touchstone.

The sensemaking and reflection which is part of what 4SD promotes, shares much synergy with this new publication, where the story is told by informants from Canada and beyond. I am simply the listener and narrator – the story is what I learned from the informants – all communications scholars and/or practitioners – and I can honestly say, this is one of the most interesting reports I have ever worked on. It provokes questions of what will we learn, what could we have done better, and – perhaps most important –will we have the insight and courage to reflect on our mistakes and do some things differently going forward?

I hope that something in this report resonates with people who read it, and that something might change their own practice in how they communicate. In this world where we are all connected in one big complex system, and where the pandemic has exemplified our global connection, we must communicate with meaning, within and beyond our local/provincial and national bubbles.

We can all connect and communicate better with one another and be a part of the solution.

—
